Best time to cycle Greece

April to early June and September to October. High summer is rideable in the Peloponnese if you start at dawn and stop by noon; the shoulder months are kinder in every way.

Mild on the coast, wet inland, snow on the Arcadian highlands.

Green hills, wildflowers, warm sea from late May, empty inland roads.
July – AugustHot
35°C and up inland. Ride the first four hours of daylight only.
September – OctoberBest
Olive-harvest light, warm sea, cool nights, very little traffic.

Daylight

Fourteen and a half hours in midsummer, twelve in late September. In the hot months the usable riding window is dawn to noon.

Wind

The summer meltemi mostly spends itself on the Aegean; the western Peloponnese sees a light afternoon sea breeze.

Roads and surfaces

Sealed inland lanes in fair condition, with some rough concrete on the steepest village links.
