May to September on the Danube, with late August and September the calmest: warm water-level air, harvest light in the Wachau, and the summer flotilla thinning out day by day.
When to ride in Austria
- Daylight
- Around sixteen hours in midsummer, still fourteen in late August. Riding before nine gives you the path almost alone.
- Wind
- Generally light and often westerly, which is why the classic direction is downstream, west to east.
- Surface
- Sealed and traffic-free for most of its length, with short gravel sections on the quieter bank.
