September Edition

Cycling Costa Rica, slowly

December to April is the classic dry season, but the veranillo — the little dry spell in July and August — is the quieter choice: the hills are still green, the tracks are firm and the coast is warm without the high-season crowds.

When to ride in Costa Rica

Daylight
Roughly 05:30 to 18:00 year round. Cloud-forest altitude means cool mornings even in the dry months — carry a layer for the descents.
Wind
The Papagayo winds blow hard across Guanacaste and northern Nicoya from December to March. In the veranillo the air is still.
Surface
Sealed roads on the traverse; hard-packed dirt and gravel across the peninsula, firm in the little dry spell.
